Friday night lights shown bright this past Friday in Strawn,TX for the legendary football game in Palo Pinto County. The Gordon Longhorns and the Strawn Greyhounds played in what's known as The Battle of Palo Pinto Creek. The two towns of Gordon and Strawn are only eight miles apart, separated by the South Fork of the Palo Pinto Creek. Both towns are proud of their six-man football teams and when this game comes around each season both towns shut down to cheer on their schools. Not only do their towns shut down, but people drive in from all around the state just to catch a glimpse of this legendary game. The rivalry has been going strong since 1923 and continues to bring about family feuds each year. It is considered the biggest and best six-man football rivalry in the state of Texas.
Strawn's population back in the 1920's mainly consisted of families who had immigrated to work in the coal mines and with the oil ventures. Gordon's population on the other hand was mainly made up of farming families. In 1920 football made it's way to this part of the state and Strawn fielded their first team. Three years later Gordon fielded their first team and the rivalry began. Strawn won the first game 52-13. Early on both schools played eleven-man football until 1955 when Gordon could no longer field a team and they switched to the six-man format. A couple of years later, Strawn finally made the switch over to six-man football as well.
Of the last 65 games between the two towns, Strawn had won 33 and Gordon had won 31. After the game on Friday, Strawn jumped up to 32 games with a win over Gordon.
