Last October we planted our winter wheat in hopes that it would grow throughout the winter months, even in this terrible drought that we are still in the midst of.
Sure enough, our winter wheat shot up and looks better than we could have imagined. In the past we have not baled our winter wheat, we just grazed it out. However, this year we plan to bale it late in April or early May.
Why is winter wheat good? Michael Jordan is to basketball what wheat pasture is to cattle. There is none better. Gains in excess of two pounds per day have been realized when grazing lightweight calves on wheat pasture. The grazing period can extend from November through May.
None the less, we will have some happy cows!
