Last week (on Thursday to be exact) we celebrated Bart's birthday! Some people go out to quiet dinners, take a relaxing vacation or take time alone for their birthday. However, when asked what he wanted to do Bart simply said that he would like to have his sons and their families over for dinner. There is nothing sweeter than time with the whole family!
Three sons, three daughter in-laws, four little cowboys and two little cowgirls descended on Honey & Granddaddy's quiet house in the late afternoon. Let's face it, when we all get together it's loud! The air was filled with the Intermixing of adult conversation, laughter, babies crying and little cowboys "beep, beep-ing" to impersonate the sound of their toy trucks! Then it was dinner time. Between filling up sippy-cups, getting bibs and washing hands, oh wait and then someone has to go to the bathroom it takes about 15 minutes to get everyone gathered around the dining room table and ready to eat. We blessed our Texas BBQ and then the routine begins. It goes something like this: The sons, Honey and Granddaddy stay at the table with the little cowboys and cowgirls while the daughter in-laws fill the kid plates. Then the daughter in-laws return to the table to cut up the kids' food and the sons go fill up their plates. Finally, the daughter in-laws, Honey and Granddaddy get their plates. WHEW! It's finally time to eat!! By this time the little cowboys and cowgirls are about done and so the rest of us eat quickly before they sneak off to play!
After dinner we sang 'Happy Birthday' and dug into Honey's delicious rum cake! In between bites the little cowboys loved shouting out their guesses as to how old Granddaddy turned... 4! 1! 2! When the dinner celebration was over, we followed suit with our tradition and all signed the white tablecloth. We may be loud, it may take us a long time to all sit down to dinner and we may have a lot of little ones needing something, but we sure do have a blast together! Bart wouldn't have wanted it any other way!
