Record keeping is important to good ranching. It allows a rancher to look back at events in past years, to study what has worked and what hasn't. I keep several journals: one for my health, one for new words and favorite quotes and my personal journal. I have done this for years. So keeping a ranch journal (data on our cattle, when we seed, the date we bale, the number of bales we harvest, information on our equipment, wildlife sightings etc.) is not a big deal for me. Having a ranch journal helps with our accounting as well. When Martye begins preparing the ranch books for our CPA each year... I often review the ranch journal to give context on our expenses. Many ranchers keep their journal in a spiral notebook, it doesn't matter what a rancher uses to write in, just as long as a journal is kept.
